Colorado Wood Burning Regulations
Appliances such as wood stoves and fireplaces cannot be installed, sold, or re-sold unless they are up to current codes. One issue that can make homeowners unsure about burning wood is related to high pollution days. The following is information that can eliminate that concern. In the following circumstances, wood-burning fires can be burned on any day in Colorado, including Air Quality Action Days:
· Your appliance is a Colorado Phase III stove, fireplace insert, masonry heater, or pellet stove, which is equal to an EPA Phase II appliance.
· Your heating appliance is a pellet stove.
· The wood burning stove in your home is the primary source of heat or provides more than half of the yearly heating.
· You live in an elevation above 7,000 feet.
If you don’t have any of these appliances or circumstances, you may want to keep the Air Quality Action Day hotline close by. The hotline number is (303) 782-0211.
Colorado Regulation No. 4
Colorado’s Air Pollution Control Regulation No. 4 contains updated requirements for the sale, installation, and operation of various new wood-burning appliances. Among the appliances regulated are masonry heaters, fireplaces, pellet stoves, wood-burning stoves, and exempt devices. All residential dwellings in the Denver-Metropolitan area, which includes seven-counties, are subject to these guidelines.
Wood is Eco-Friendly
The strict burning regulations in Colorado are largely associated with reducing the amount of particulate matter in the air. When wood is burned in efficient appliances, combustion is more complete and there are fewer emissions. If you’ve been looking for ways to reduce your carbon foot print, burn firewood! Wood is carbon-neutral.
We don’t want Coloradans to miss out on the enjoyment of wood-burning appliances due to a misunderstanding. Fireplaces and wood stoves are highly popular amenities for good reason. The warm and romantic ambiance created by a crackling fire in the fireplace is an unrivaled setting.
