The things that make a home uniquely yours include memorable architectural features. Although a fireplace is an unbeatable centerpiece for any room in the home, there are ways to elevate a fireplace and make it even more special. A fireback is a fireplace accessory that can provide additional decorative appeal and other benefits, as well.
What is a Fireback?
A fireback for the fireplace is a piece of heavy cast iron or stainless steel placed against the back wall of a fireplace. Firebacks were originally important additions to a hearth because they protected the potentially vulnerable back wall of the firebox, which is subjected to intense temperatures. It is a critical safety issue to be sure the firebox is in good condition and able to protect combustible parts of the home from exposure to the extreme heat. Advancements have been made in fireplace technology, so that the back wall of fireplaces can typically withstand far more than materials used in days of old. Still, firebacks offer several advantages in this day and age.
One -Improved Efficiency
Sources say that a masonry fireplace can have nearly 50% better efficiency with the addition of a fireback. Whereas the firebricks at the back of the firebox absorb much of the heat from a fire, which then dissipates, a radiant fireback radiates and reflects much of that heat back into the home. This is actually very significant, since masonry fireplaces usually have only about 10% efficiency at best, with most of the heat going up the chimney.
Two -Decorative Appeal
A fireback is an addition that can really set a fireplace apart. Not all firebacks have a decorative quality; but when they do, the look can be stunning. There are no limits to the options in design for a fireback. They can be so elaborate as to “steal the show,” making an already eye-pleasing fireplace into a statement piece.
Three -Options
The two materials you can choose from for a fireback for your fireplace are cast iron and stainless steel. Cast iron is the prominent material, for good reason. Cast iron radiates heat very well and maintains its look much longer. Stainless steel firebacks become discolored and also need more cleaning because soot tends to build up on stainless steel, though not cast iron.
Another type of option homeowners welcome is a price range. There are some firebacks that are plain and more affordable than those with elaborate embellishments.
A Bit of Trivia
One of the famous fireplace firebacks from times past is still on display in the childhood home of Joan of Arc, who was born in 1412. There is very little in the historic home in Domrémy-la-Pucelle, France; and the decorative fireback stands out. Firebacks date back to the same century in which Joan of Arc lived. Those were also the initial days of iron casting. Simple designs that adorned the earliest firebacks were often everyday objects, including personal items, furniture fragments, and foods such as biscuits or butter. Firebacks have made a major comeback in recent decades.
